The Story Behind Mihrab: Why We Chose This Name

Mihrab Team6 min read

A name can be more than a name. It can carry a story and remind you why you started.
When we began building our app, we wanted a name that had meaning and reflected what we hoped to create. After exploring different ideas, one kept bringing us back to something familiar in every mosque: Mihrab.

It may be a simple niche or a beautifully decorated arch, but when Salah begins, its purpose is clear. It shows the direction.
That simple idea stayed with us. In a busy world full of distractions, we also wanted to create something that helps Muslims pause, refocus, and stay connected to their worship.

And that is how Mihrab became more than just our app’s name.

The Meaning Behind the Name “Mihrab”

A mihrab is a niche in the Qibla wall of a mosque that indicates the direction Muslims face during Salah. It gives the congregation a point of orientation.
Wherever you enter the mosque from, the mihrab tells you where the front is. More importantly, it helps show the direction of the Qibla.

People may come from different places. They may speak different languages. They may have completely different lives outside the mosque. But when the prayer begins, they stand together and turn in one direction.

That idea of direction is what inspired the name Mihrab.

We Live in a World Pulling Us in Every Direction

Most of us know how easily a day can disappear. You wake up with a plan. Then messages arrive.
Work begins, responsibilities pile up. Something needs your attention. Then something else. Before you realise it, hours have passed.

Sometimes, even the things that matter most can slowly get pushed to the side. Not because we do not care. But because life is busy. We do not always need a dramatic change.

Sometimes, we simply need a reminder. A moment to pause. A reason to look up from everything competing for our attention. And that is one of the ideas behind Mihrab.

A Small Tool With a Clear Purpose

We do not believe an app can replace sincere worship. An app cannot replace standing in Salah. It cannot replace opening the Qur'an with a sincere heart. It cannot replace making dua. And it certainly cannot replace a person's relationship with Allah. But technology is already part of our daily lives.
We reach for our phones when we wake up. We use them at work, while travelling, and throughout the day.

So we asked ourselves a simple question:

What if the same device that constantly competes for our attention could also help us return to what matters?

That is the space we hope Mihrab can fill. Not as a replacement for worship. But as a companion that supports it.

Like a Mihrab, We Wanted to Help People Find Their Direction

The mihrab in a mosque serves a clear purpose. It indicates the direction of the Qibla. Our app does something different, but the idea behind its name is similar.
We wanted to create something that could help Muslims stay connected to their daily worship.

Something that could help bring useful Islamic tools into one place. Something that could make it easier to pause during a busy day and remember Allah.

That is what the name Mihrab represents to us. Direction, focus, and a point to stay connected with Allah.

The Best Names Keep You Accountable

Choosing the name Mihrab also gave us something else. A reminder of what we should build toward.
Every feature we create should have a purpose. Every reminder should respect the user's time and attention. Every improvement should move the app closer to its goal: helping Muslims support their daily connection with Allah.

A meaningful name is not only something you give to a product. It can also become a question you keep asking yourself. Are we still building in the direction we intended? For us, that question matters.

More Than Another App on Your Phone

There are already countless apps competing for attention. Most want you to spend more time scrolling. More time watching. More time clicking.
But our goal is not simply to keep you inside Mihrab for as long as possible. Sometimes the best outcome is the opposite.

Perhaps you open the app, check something you need, perform your Salah, read a few verses of the Qur'an, make a dua, and then put your phone away.

That is enough. The purpose is not to become another distraction. The purpose is to be useful when you need it.

A Personal Companion, Wherever You Are

Not everyone can spend their entire day near a mosque. You may be at work, In a university, travelling, and living in a place where the nearest mosque is far away. Or simply trying to manage family, work, and everything else life brings.
Wherever you are, your phone is often nearby. We wanted Mihrab to become a useful companion for those everyday moments.

A place you can turn to when you need help staying aware of your prayer and daily Islamic routine. A small space in your digital life that points you back toward what truly matters.

Why “Mihrab” Felt Right

There were probably many names we could have chosen. But Mihrab felt different because it was not only a name.
It carried an idea. A mihrab does not pray for anyone. It does not replace the worshipper's intention.

It does not force anyone to turn toward the Qibla. It simply shows the direction. The person still has to take the step. That is how we think about our app too.

Mihrab cannot create your relationship with Allah for you. But perhaps it can help make space for it. Perhaps it can remind you when it is time to pray. Perhaps it can make it easier to return to the Qur'an. Perhaps it can help you pause for a moment and make dua.

The action is always yours. The intention is always yours. We simply hope to build something that supports you along the way.

Our Story Is Still Being Written

The name Mihrab represents where we started, but it also reminds us where we want to go. Building an app is not only about adding more features.
It is about asking whether those features are genuinely useful. It is about listening, improving, and remembering the people we hope to serve.

Most importantly, it is about staying connected to the purpose behind the work. That is why the name still matters to us.

Because sometimes, when there are too many options, too many ideas, and too many directions to take, you need something that brings you back to the original purpose.

For us, Mihrab does that.

The Story Behind Our App Name (Short Answer)

We chose the name “Mihrab” because a mihrab gives worshippers a clear point of direction, and we hope our app can help Muslims create more moments of direction, focus, and connection with Allah in their daily lives.

Final Thoughts

In a mosque, the mihrab quietly indicates where to turn. It does not need to shout. Its purpose is clear. That is the kind of idea that inspired our name.
We live in a world full of noise, notifications, and distractions. Everyone is competing for our attention.

Our hope for Mihrab is simple. To create a small space that helps you pause. To help you remember. To help you return.

And, whenever life pulls you in too many directions, to remind you of what matters most. That is the story behind the name Mihrab.
